Rafi Maldonado-Lopez has been working for over thirty-five years in myriad areas of the arts, education, community development, and human services either as a performer, teacher, director, administrator, or producer. He has a diverse and extensive background as a dancer, teacher, and choreographer with both national and international companies. He holds a BA in Arts Management and Applied Arts Education and is an MFA candidate in Choreography and Composition.
In 2018 he was appointed Founding Artistic Director of Compañía Ballet Metropolitano de Medellin/Medanza (Colombia), and earned praise for his new works in choreography. After many successful years in development, arts administration, education, and community outreach with organizations such as Minnesota Dance Theatre, University of Pennsylvania,
New World School of the Arts, and Miami City Ballet he founded the Inter-American Choreographic Institute (ICI) in 2014. The mission of the ICI is the creation, expansion, and support of artistic ventures that first and foremost support work that reflects the cultural paradigms and consciousness of the Americas. Alongside, he was appointed Managing Director for Sanctuary of the Arts in 2021, tasked with curating, developing and/or presenting new work that sustains the artistic process, affects positive social change, encourages practices that heal and empower, and values the cultural identities of our communities
